We all need help now and then

Life always has bumps in the road!

“Stand on your own two feet.” “Take care of yourself.” I was taught these things from an early age. As a result, asking for help has never been my strong suit. That fierce independence has been both a blessing and a curse.

However my recent bilateral knee replacement forced me to be totally dependent on others. My family has been wonderful. They have stayed with me, helped me wash, move, dress myself, made my meals, played games with me, encouraged me and comforted me. Friends have offered incredible amounts of support as well. That support has been a big factor in my recovery—which is going very well.

It has been a vivid reminder that we all need each other. No one can do it all by themselves. We need to be connected to others and to accept the support and encouragement they give us. We all need help and support sometimes. Its ok to ask for it and to accept it with gratitude.

So reach out to your friends, family, colleagues etc. Thank them for their support in the past. If you need support now-ask for it.  If you don’t need support now, remember you will need support in the future. We all will—life always has bumps in the road!
