Celebrate the small milestones

My milestones have become smaller, but not less important

As I recover from my knee replacements, my milestones have become smaller. Being able to lift my weaker left leg off the bed by itself, walking up the stairs, walking with a cane, standing to brush my teeth and now walking without a cane! These have been wonderful milestones for me.

I have been focused on minute but significant improvements for the last 23 days. Each day has been better than the one before. I am excited about each new thing.

It has made me aware that minute and significant things happen all the time. That I need to remember to continue to focus on these day to day miracles during and after this healing period.

The more we can ground ourselves in the small wonders that are all around us, the more we can develop a deep level of contentment. Whether it’s a great cup of coffee, a good hair day, playing a boardgame, solving Wordle in 3, the changes in the garden as fall approaches or the laughter of those we love—try to notice the wonder of it and be grateful for all of it. These mini-milestones help me navigate the inevitable difficult moments in my life with grace and remember even in the midst of it there is something to be grateful for.  It also makes me feel less out of control when life does not go the way I want it to.

Celebrate the small wins and soon they build to a bigger sense of control and contentment in your life.
